I promised to give you fashion designer reviews, so here I am. The very first person that stood out to me when I thought about fashion designers and fashion crafters was a bubbly and very adorable designer by the name of Emily. I met her at the Richmond Craft Mafia’s Spring Bada Bing at Plant Zero in 2010. I was amazed at her collection and really loved the interview we did, discussing how she created her work, what inspired and so forth. You can check out that first interview below.
Emily is the owner and creator of Natty Paint, www.NattyPaint.com , a business she founded in 2009 in Baltimore, MD but now stationed in Brooklyn, New York. She takes beautiful and hip designs, a fusion of Baltimore and Brooklyn’s artistic and musical scene, and transforms them into fantastic and fun pieces that every one could appreciate. It also doesn’t hurt that “Natty” means fashionable as well, which is even more reason to check out her site.
The label has quickly gained a cult following in Baltimore and has continued onto Brooklyn. Famed musicians such as, Animal Collective, Dan Deacon, Delorean, Crystal Castles, La Roux, The Rapture, Rye Rye, M.I.A., and Beach House have worn natty Paint. They all have worn these pieces during their performances as well as actors Lucy Liu and Brie Larson.
Natty Paint is comprised of three lines: silk-screened American Apparel shirts, higher priced, fashion-forward silk-screened and reworked vintage apparel, and an in-house designed silk-screened line. All clothing is eco-friendly and sustainable designs using water-based paint, saved vintage, and sweatshop free materials.
I was amazed when I first discovered Natty Paint, because of how talented Emily was in taking already created pieces and turning into something that is not only more youthful and up to date, but also more interesting and eclectic. Her style and designs can make everyone who wears her clothes look like a certified rockstar, even if the spotlight isn’t their calling. I can see why talents like Rye Rye and M.I.A; rock her clothes on the stage and off. The designs speak power and confidence all the way through.
When I reached out to Emily, I was afraid she would be too busy to get back to me before the summer was over. Luckily, she had time to tell me what she was up to…
“Right now I’m working on my summer 2012 line for wholesale buyers; the inspiration is psychedelic beach, a lot of bright colors, crazy patterns, and stripes”
When I asked her where she gets her inspiration from when it comes to her designs and her different collections, she stated, “I get my inspiration from all over, from seeing what people are wearing on the street, to trips to the zoo, or watching visually intriguing movies like Holy Mountain. I also love working with musicians, and get a lot of inspiration from performers such as Rye Rye.”
Emily seems to have a great story. She is doing what she loves and she makes it possible for people to enjoy it as well. I met her at a vendor’s table at a local craft show, now she is dressing some of the most phenomenal people in the most phenomenal clothes. What does that say about perseverance and tenacity? You have to have it to take any dream to the next level. That is exactly what Emily displays in her work and with her business.
When I asked her to give you readers a little advice, she said, “The best advice I can give anyone is a lot of hard work, believing strongly in what you have, and constantly meeting new people is the best path to success!”
That’s right Emily! I just want to thank her for her example of great talent and amazing vision. Keep doing it, girl. You’re amazing!
